Spring Cleaning Tips

5 Spring Cleaning Tips

The sun is out, the days are getting longer, flowers are blooming, trees are budding, it’s springtime! And with all that fresh air outside, it’s time to freshen up inside, too. Spring cleaning is a great way to deep clean all the dark corners, take inventory of what you have in your home, and get rid of all the junk taking up space in your closets. That said, it’s a big project, it can be overwhelming or easy to forget things, so here are our best spring cleaning tips.

  1. Make a Plan.

Planning is the easiest place to start on your spring cleaning. Make a schedule of when you’re going to go through each part of your house, make a list of things you need to do for each room or area, and then prep! If you’ve got a lot of junk to clear out, rent a waste removal container for the end of your cleaning or when you’ll be doing the most work. Go through each space and see if any paint needs touch-ups so you can find those paint cans or get new paint mixed. Make sure you have all the cleaning supplies you’ll need like disinfecting wipes, dusters, and cleaners. There’s nothing worse than starting a project like spring cleaning, then realizing you’re missing a cleaner or you run out of garbage space, so planning is key.

  1. Go Green.

If you want to be eco-conscious in your cleaning, you can separate out any waste for recycling and rent a recycling bin with your waste removal container. Remember to reference this list on what can or cannot be recycled. You can also head to your local thrift store to drop off a donation for anything that is still usable but you don’t need anymore. As you go through each area, separate things by trash, recycling, and donation. This reduces waste and ensures good items find a second life through thrifting and recyclables are repurposed instead of piling up in a landfill.

  1. Get Deep in the Little Details.

There are a lot of things around the house that don’t get cleaned often, and this is your moment to give those things some extra love. Give your doormats a good shake out, take everything out of your fridge and freezer to wipe down all the shelves, run your oven’s cleaning cycle, wash and dry your curtains, and wipe down your baseboards. As you move through each area on your plan, look out for these items that don’t need to be cleaned often, but still need to be cleaned every once in a while.

  1. Don’t Forget the Big Things, Too.

It’s easy to forget to clean big items like couches and mattresses. Grab your vacuum and use the crevice and upholstery tools to clean out the nooks and crannies of your large upholstered furniture. If you really want to get into it, use a steam cleaner to kill dust mites near the surface of these items, and vacuum afterward to make sure all that gunk is out of there. Follow it up with a disinfectant spray, and you’ll have a fresh place to rest.

  1. Clean the Cleaners.

Spring cleaning is a perfect time to clean all your cleaning supplies and tools. Clean your vacuum’s roller and canister and get a new filter, sanitize your toilet brushes, toss out old cleaning rags that are past their lifetime. This is your chance to make sure your house is fresh, and all the things you clean with are fresh, too.
