The holidays are full of fun, gifts, and celebrations, but they can also create a lot of trash! From Thanksgiving to Christmas, everything from wrapping paper, food scraps, and decorations can pile up quickly. Learning how to handle holiday waste the right way can help keep our neighborhoods clean and protect the planet.

Here are some easy tips to make sure your holiday waste goes to the right place!

What Kind of Holiday Waste Do We Create?

Gift Wrapping and Packaging

  • Wrapping paper: Most wrapping paper can be placed in a recycle bin, however, some kinds, like shiny or glittery paper, can’t and must be placed in the trash.
  • Bows, ribbons, and tape: Reuse items to save money and reduce waste. Anything torn or destroyed typically belongs in the trash

Decorations

  • Christmas Trees: Our residential customers enjoy free tree pickups. Simply request a bulky item pickup and we’ll drop by and collect it.
  • Old string lights: These do NOT belong in the trash! Instead, consider donating them to a local second-hand store if they are still functional or take them to an e-waste drop-off facility to be safely disposed of.
  • Broken ornaments and tinsel: Due to the material, they are not recyclable and should go in the garbage.

Food

  • Leftovers or spoiled food: Plan meals carefully to avoid cooking too much. Compost food scraps like veggie peelings or fruit cores.
  • Turkey Bones: Bones can easily be boiled and used as broth for future meals. They can also be composted along with other organic materials.

Electronics

  • Dated devices: Don’t throw away old electronics in the trash. Bring them to certified e-waste recycling centers. For additional questions about various household items and how to dispose of them correctly, see this guide!

Tips to Create Less Waste

You can make a big difference during the holidays by creating less waste. Start by wrapping smart – use reusable bags, fabric, or recyclable paper instead of coated wrapping paper. When it comes to meals, make a list and buy only what you need to minimize leftovers. Decorations can also be reused or donated to give them a second life. By planning ahead and making thoughtful choices, you can create less waste while still enjoying the season.
